Anthony Overton Elementary was one of 50 Chicago public schools shuttered in 2013, in a widely-criticized move by then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Since then, it was purchased by the Washington Park Development Group in an effort to maintain the facilities as a neighborhood resource.
Architecture and urban design practice Borderless Studio is leading this work by building outdoor amenities—a community garden, colorful murals, a rest area, and canopies—and activating the space with public events.
I created this signage for use around the garden in collaboration with Borderless. The signs serve as an educational tool and as an affirmation of the care the communal space deserves.
